Så fungerar det

Vi vill skriva en nyhet som läsaren förstår snabbt. Det viktigaste kommer först: vem, vad, var och när. Sedan kommer detaljerna och till sist något om vad som händer nu. Rubriken är kort och säger det viktigaste.

I en nyhet återberättar vi ofta vad någon sa: The head teacher said that the school was very proud. Vid återberättande flyttas verbet ofta ett steg bakåt i tiden: is blir was. Citat sätts inom citattecken: "It was amazing," said Emma.

The coach said that the team had trained every day. Det betyder: tränaren sa att laget hade tränat varje dag.

Lost dog finds its way home after 40 miles

A dog that went missing during a family holiday in Wales has found its way back to its home in Shropshire, more than forty miles away. Bella, a three-year-old border collie, ran off on a beach near Aberystwyth last Tuesday when she was frightened by fireworks. Her owners, the Hughes family, searched for her for two days. They put up posters, asked local radio stations for help and shared her photo online hundreds of times. On Thursday, sadly, they had to go home without her. On Sunday morning, Mr Hughes opened the front door to get the milk. Bella was lying on the doormat. "She was dirty, thin and very tired, but she was wagging her tail," he said. "I couldn't believe my eyes. My daughter cried for about an hour." The local vet, Dr Sarah Price, checked Bella and said that she was in good health apart from sore paws. "Dogs have an amazing sense of smell and direction," she explained. "We don't fully understand how they do it, but cases like this happen more often than people think." Several people have now contacted the family to say that they saw a black and white dog walking along country roads during the week. A farmer near Newtown said that he gave her some water on Friday evening. The Hughes family say they will be more careful in the future. "Next year we're going on holiday somewhere quiet," said Mrs Hughes. "And Bella is getting a GPS collar." The family have thanked everyone who shared Bella's photo. They are also planning to visit the farmer near Newtown to say thank you in person, with a cake.
